Speaking of mothers in bathing suits!Dara Torres is a 41 year old mother who, just this past week ,qualified for her *fifth* Olympics in swimming. Wow.
As most of you know I love swimming, and am already proud of the sport but women like Torres really kick it up a notch. Swimming is a great form of exercise because there is less pressure exerted on your joints and bones due to our buoyancy in water. Of course training for the olympics is a whole different ball game.
Dara won five medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, since then, and now that she's qualified in four events for Beijing, there have been a lot of rumors about performance enhancing drug use. This is like making an already steep uphill battle steeper. The NY Times article by E. Wiel sites Travis T. Tygart, C.E.O. of the United States Anti-Doping Agency as acknowledging that "since the high-profile steroid scandals involving Barry Bonds and Marion Jones, the onus has fallen on athletes to prove that they’re clean, and that that’s nearly impossible to do."
I'll be cheering on from the couch and wish her the best of luck in Beijing. In honor of her and the humid heat we have going on in the North East right now, I'm going to head off to the pool!
