What is bioinformatics?
A couple of definitions I like:
A scientific discipline that comprises all aspects of the gathering, storing, handling, analysing, interpreting and spreading of biological information. link
The study of the inherent structure of biological information and biological systems. It brings together biological data from genome research with the theory and tools of mathematics and computer science. link
The science of informatics as applied to biological research. Informatics is the management and analysis of data using advanced computing techniques. Bioinformatics is particularly important as an adjunct to genomics research, because of the large amount of complex data this research generates. link
