Friday's Tangent: Emotional drag

When you are a swimmer there is this concept of drag. When practicing, usually you wear an extra, old, loose suit on top of another regular suit, for drag. Basically, since it is loose it slows you down a bit. That way when you are racing without your drag suit you it is easier, you feel lighter and you go faster. Here is the only picture I could find on google images:

Cheers to this random swimmer.

Sometimes I feel like old relationships are like drag suits, emotionally. Even just mentally, sometimes they slow you down a bit. You look back and think about it, and it prevents you from moving forward; mostly because you think about everything that was right, not so much what was wrong. Then the older you get, the more of them you have, the easier it is to be reminded.

I'll offer a competing sports metaphor - old relationships are like having run a race course and having not come in first. You can let the knowledge that you didn't do as well as you'd like in that race drag you down, or you can view it as a learning experience. How you handle turns. Where to sprint and where to conserve your energy. How to prepare. Even though you might be racing a new course and thus not know the lay of the land, these things help you in future races... that is, provided you don't get caught up in the drag of the old ones.

I'm a glass half-full sort. ;-)

Hope all is well and that you find yourself in some good races soon, complete with a positive attitude about them!
