On February 23rd, Cuban political prisoner Orlando Zapata Tamayo died, 82 days into a hunger strike to demand human rights. Tamayo, who had indicated that he would accept water, was denied it by Cuban jailers...the following day, dissident Guillermo Fariñas, a doctor of psychology and independent journalist, who is not a prisoner, launched his own hunger strike. He says that if the Cuban government releases its political prisoners, he will end his strike. If not, Fariñas says, "I am ready in this hunger strike to go to the ultimate consequences, including my death."
